Nontoxic pest control Tips for getting rid of cockroaches in your home

Something Naturally beautiful and gross altogether to me is called Pest. According to Australian govt department of health and ageing "A pest is any animal or plant which has a harmful effect on humans, their food or their living conditions. Pests include animals which
carry disease-causing micro-organisms and parasites.

For example, mosquitoes which carry Ross River virus and Murray Valley encephalitis.
For example, termites can cause considerable damage to timber in buildings. Another example, bed bugs (so called because they often bite people in their beds) are very difficult to control. Their bites can cause great irritation to those bitten.......we will talk more about bed bugs later.

Today i will be talking about one of the most common pest called Cockroach.
Cockroach is a pest, there are different species of cockroaches

and they carry different kinds of bacteria, parasitic worms and other human pathogens. As they crawl through decaying matter, garbage or sewage--dirty ewww stuff, they pick up harmful germs on the spine of their legs and body and then carry it onto food surfaces and into our left over dinner pots or dishes. It's easy to find a cockroach in a home that maintains the habit of leaving dirty dishes around; cockroaches will multiple and breed where ever they see favorable and the germs cockroach carry with them stay protected and infective for many weeks.  Cockroach do carry allergens that cause allergic reactions and asthma in children. These allergens will build up in deposits of droppings-- secretions, empty cast skins and dead bodies of roaches.

If you're living in an area infested by cockroaches or in an older housing prone to this pest i would like to share some nontoxic cockroach exterminator and prevention tips.

First begin by
  • Cleaning out your home surroundings---cabinet, back of refrigerator, kitchen sinks, insides of your oven where ever you see grease and food is stuck regularly. Make sure there are no left over food and stagnant mold water laying around the sink or cabinet because small piece of food or damp places will attract pest like cockroach. Clean out counter, all food dishes and keep them dry.
  • Make sure snack wrapping aren't laying around the house and cover your garbage/trash cans with a lid always.
  • Fix the leaky kitchen pipes, loose wall paper, all crack and crevices where they tend to go.
  • De-clutter your magazine rack and all areas of your home; the more simple and airy-clean you keep your home, the less pest it will attract.
  • Trim any foliage around the windows of your house and do get rid of those dampy log of woods just laying around the yard or fence.
  • If you leave out in the country, the best nontoxic cockroach killer will be to get yourself a chicken or a wall gecko but not both at the same time because chicken will kill the gecko. Chickens and Wall Gecko love to chase and eat cockroaches so they will help you reduce their number. If you have cats this won't be an ideal solution for you, because cats will chase and kill your gecko and chicken for dinner.
  • I would grow a catnip plant around the house because Catnip contains a natural chemical nepetacone which is a natural repellant to cockroaches.
  • Bay leaves, powdered cayenne pepper, dried or fresh cucumber peels also helps to repel cockroaches (i would use a dried peel to avoid attracting other pest like vegetable/fruit fly.
  • Baking soda mixed with powdered sugar and bay leaves helps to repel cockroaches.
  • Beer or laundry detergent mixed with water will kill cockroaches if you find them in your bathroom tub.
  • A roach bait trap is also a good idea, especially the once that have glue inside it because the glue will clamp their legs once they crawl into it.
Chemical treatment for cockroach
  • Powdered Boric acid is poisonous to humans and other domestic pets but cockroaches dislike it and where ever you spray this---cockroaches will not go there and if it does crawl over the Boric acid, it will die.

  • Dusting Dri-die/Drione also known as Silica Gel (aluminum silicate) in area where roaches may invade your home from is helpful because this chemical substance will scratch their protective coating away and kill them. Although this is a nontoxic chemical substance, i still do suggest you take precaution like wearing a hand glove before applying the solution. I don't recommend artificial silica gel because it can cause pulmonary problems to pets and human.

  • I have also tried DE dust (Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade) on cockroaches, it didn't work too well for killing them but it did repel them. DE dust is best for preventing and exterminating bed bugs and slugs but it doesn't seem fit for killing the type of cockroach i tried it on.
  • If you want to get rid of cockroaches without the stinky garlic or onion smell and without attracting fruit fly leaving banana in a cover covered with Vaseline try the new improvised As seen on Tv pest cure recipe below.

pound of borax
ounces of powdered sugar
1/2 cup of coffee grounds

Salt (sodium chloride)
Mix it all together in a bottle with a lid and then apply it to those areas of the house where cockroaches breed.

Clean and Treat your home often using any one of the tips above. Remember to remove your children and all pets such as birds, cats, fish and dogs from the premises when treating the home with any kind of pesticide or insecticide that isn't suitable for pet or humans. Our goal is preventive extermination -------meaning not to kill every roach in nature but to repel them away from our own environment---homes.  In my experience Borax will repel little cockroaches from counter tops.

Non Gmo Project

Buy more products that have The “Non-GMO Project Verified” Seal when ever possible. This Verification seal  indicates that the product bearing the seal has gone through Non GMO project verification process. This verification is an assurance that a product has been produced according to consensus-based best practices for GMO avoidance.
The retRevised Seal copyailers who started the Non-GMO Project were motivated by a simple idea. They believed that consumers in North America should have access to clearly-labeled non-GMO food and products, now and in the future. That conviction continues to guide the Non-GMO Project, as North America’s only independent verification for products made according to best practices for GMO avoidance.

NONGMOPROJECT goal is to help us make informed shopping decisions.

Find an overview of the Goals of the Non-GMO Project Standard at Non-Gmo Project.org

The Standard’s goal is to assist farmers, processors and manufacturers in avoiding the contamination of GMO’s by progressively reducing the risk of GMO contamination.

  •     Currently, several major crops are at significant risk of GMO contamination. At-risk production inputs and ingredients derived from these at-risk crops are identified in the Standard.

  •     The Standard requires practices and processes for controlling GMO contamination by these at-risk inputs and ingredients. Methods such as segregation, traceability, risk assessment, sampling techniques, and quality control management are emphasized in the Standard.

Hint: Choose food products that have NON-GMO verified; organic  or USDA seal.

What can you do about breast cancer?

Breast cancer is one of the top killers of women. According to the Americancancersociety.org "Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it too".

Breast cancer symptoms includes all and more of these below

  • Swelling of all or part of the breast

  • Skin irritation or dimpling

  • Breast pain

  • Nipple pain or nipple turning inward

  • Nipple discharge excluding breast milk

  • A lump in the underarm area

  • Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple area or breast skin.
Find tips and secrets to preventing breast cancer in the video below.

You can prevent or reduce the onset of breast cancer by cultivating a nontoxic lifestyle doing the following.

Check your breast regularly: It is important you do your self breast exam every month (3-7days) following your menstrual cycle. Careful monthly exams will make you more familiar with your breast tissue so you can detect changes easily. Also stay on top of your annual physical check ups with your doctor to help prevent or discover any problems before it becomes chronic.
Limit alcohol consumption: The more alcohol you drink the greater your risk of developing breast cancer. Limit alcohol consumption--- when you choose to drink alcohol including beer, wine or liquor limit yourself to no more than one drink a day. If you're a wine lover try my favorite wine by America's first organic Winery called frey organic red wine made without sulfites and harsh ingredients. You can get a bottle of frey organic wine at twinliquors.com for about $9.99. It is not as sweet-sugary as other wines like reunite but it's very smooth and will relax you.

Hint---Breast feeding is healthy for your breast because the longer you breast fed your kid the greater your protection from breast cancer.

Do not use long-term hormonal therapy because it can increase your risk for breast cancer. Also you can choose abstinence, birth control herb like paintbrush or withdrawal method as an alternative to birth control pills and patches to reduce your risk for breast cancer.

Avoid exposure to carcinogenic or immune disrupting cosmetic ingredients, cigarette smoke, avoid carcinogenic food additives, avoid been overly exposed to environmental pollution like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons found in vehicle exhaust for a long period of time. Also avoid toxic chemical ingredients like parabens, phthalates, Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA) and Monoethanolanine (MEA) etc; and food ingredient like BHT, BHA, MSG, ASPARTAME and more.

Control your weight: Being over weight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is especially true if obesity occurs later in life, particularly after menopause.
Do get plenty of exercise because being physically active can help you maintain a healthy weight and mood which, in return helps prevent breast cancer. 45minute to one hour every 4 days a week of brisk walking, jogging, dancing, yoga and more alkaline food without high corn syrup, wheat gluten, refined flour and artificial sugar can really helps trim weight gain.

Eat plenty Alkaline food containing good fat like Avocado, flaxseed, Bananas etc. Alkaline water and good herbal supplements like Alive whole food energizer multi-vitamin max potency containing vitamin D may be useful.  Drink plenty of raw fruit juice or purified water with lemon.
Finally, i don't reccomend routine annual mammograms---radiation therapies and chemotherapy but seek an alternative advice first---Try an alternative screening called "Breast Thermography".

"Breast Thermography is an FDA approved screening tool for detecting breast cancer and has no harmful effects on the body. I can't imagine a more important way to support your health than actively engaging in preventative screenings. And what better gift to give yourself than health and peace of mind?
This screening is perfect for women of all ages who are concerned about developing breast cancer and want to take a pro-active approach to their health. I notice that many of my female patients resist screening tests because they are "afraid to find out" if something is going wrong. The good news about Breast Thermography is that we can detect cellular changes up to 10 years prior to the cells becoming cancerous" -------from Santa Cruz Naturopathic Medical.
Dr. Juli Mazi, N.D. (Naturopathic Doctor)  from Santa Cruz Naturopathic Medical Center says Breast Thermography is an excellent imaging technique for detecting breast cancer. There is no radiation involved and no compression. We offer this as a clinic to our patients and to the community. The next Breast Thermography Clinic is May 18-19. If you're interested in signing up for this, call 831-477-1377.
